Jane & Craig Welman

Craig S. Wellman, District Governor 1996-1997

Craig S. Wellman has participated in community service organizations and projects all of his life, feeling a sense of deep satisfaction from giving something back to the community.  He has served as Chairman of the Board of Directors of his church and continues to be active by volunteering in area schools and Scouting organizations.  Craig and his family hosted inner city children in their home through the Fresh Air Program for many years.  He served as the Captain of his Rescue Service and as Deputy Fire Chief.  He was selected Man of the Year by the Chamber of Commerce.  He also worked on his hometown’s Comprehensive Plan Committee.

Craig and his wife, Jane, an elementary school teacher, grew up together in Kennebunk and have been married for twenty-five years.  They have two sons, Christopher, age 16, who competes on the swim team, collects old cameras, and plays jazz on his trumpet, and Johnathan, age 13, who also competes on the swim team, collects stamps, roller blades, and pays the saxophone.  Both are actively involved in Boy Scouts, play a mean game of tennis, and have no trouble keeping up with their parents on the ski slopes.  Besides skiing, Craig also enjoys swimming, running, fishing, tennis, golf, sailing, camping and canoeing.

Craig has been a woodworker for twenty-five years, starting his own business in 1977.  He restores period antiques, as well as custom designing and building furniture and architectural woodwork, and selling specialty hardwoods and hand tools.

In January 1984, Craig joined his local Rotary Club, finding that it gave him the opportunity to serve his community in many different ways, offering him interesting choices for community service.  Two of the programs of which he is particularly proud are developing and funding a D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) program with his local elementary schools and serving on the Project Graduation Committee every year, providing a safe and fun graduation night for all students.  Craig also served as President in 1991 and as a member of the Board of Directors for seven years.  He then became involved with both his Club’s newly formed Interact Club and the District Youth Exchange Program.  Craig has hosted several exchange students in his home over the last few years, as well acting as counselor for several others.

Craig was chosen Team Leader for the Group Study Exchange with Australia in 1993, and was awarded a District Citation.  He and his family have since had the opportunity to host Team Leaders and members of GSE Teams from Australia, India, Germany, and Argentina in their home.  Craig served on the District Group Study Exchange Committee and as District Chairman of the Youth Exchange Committee, as District Governor Designate, and as District Governor Nominee.
