One of the highlights of being district Governor is that I have the opportunity to acknowledge those who have achieved greatness in giving back to others in their community. I believe that as Rotarians, we all give to our communities but there are some who really go the extra mile. Recently, at the “World Peace and Understanding” dinner, we honored 29 such new members with an award titled “Above and Beyond” for their passion and exceptional efforts in this, their very first year or two as Rotarians. I just want to thank all of you fellow Rotarians, Interactors, Rotaractors, and friends for coming together and honoring those members for their hard work in their community. It reaffirms your beliefs in the ideals of Rotary and demonstrates your support for the efforts of your fellow Rotarians.

Thank you!

This month’s “What’s Your Story?” theme is Water and Sanitation Month.  Submit a story about your club’s involvement in this area of focus and your club’s name will go into a drawing to win two free tickets to the District Conference.  This month’s deadline for submission is March 31st. Stories should be 1 or 2 paragraphs. Pictures are a plus! If you have questions, write me or your Assistant Governor. Please e-mail “What’s Your Story?” entries to your Assistant Governor.  The drawing will take place at the District Assembly in April and all of the stories will be featured at the District Conference.
       DISTRICT HISTORY TRIVIA
Sorry there was nothing to guess for February!

Last month’s question:   There was no District History question last month due to circumstances beyond my control but I am back on track!

This month’s District History question:  I was asked at the World Peace and Understanding Dinner by a sitting club president how many districts her club had been in during its history as a Rotary Club.  This got me to thinking that I had not put this information up on the District website – it is there now!

So the question for this month is as follows:  The Rotary Club of Portland is the oldest club in District 7780.  How many different district numbers has it been under since it was chartered on September 1, 1915?

You will find help with the answer in the District Yearbook - Historical Notes on a subpage.  Now be the first to send me your answer!

WHAT IS IT?  WHY IS IT?

Rotary International governance is based upon its member clubs – not upon the personalities of its senior leaders.  Thus, Rotary Foundation Trustees don't spend Foundation assets on programs, and Rotary International Directors don't determine our rules of governance.  How then do we govern ourselves?

FILLS A BUS TO SUPPORT AREA FOOD BANK

Bath Rotarians, Bath Sunrise Rotarians, Morse Interact advisor Leslie, and her son Thomas Trundy, who is a Morse Interact Club member, helped almost fill a school bus with food donations and collected just over $1000 in cash and check donations for the Bath Area Food Bank on Saturday, February 6. We are grateful to Kim (who is a Bath Rotarian) and Steve Brackett for allowing us to hold the food drive in front of their store and to the folks at Bath Bus Service for donating the use of the bus, This effort is a big help to the food pantry at this time of year. And last but not least, thanks to all of the Brackett's customers and employees who came out and donated food and money today to make this a very successful food drive.

ROTARY AND INTERACT STUDENTS GATHER FOR ANNUAL POTLUCK

Feb. 18, 2016

SEABROOK — Members from the Rotary Club of Hampton joined Seabrook Middle School’s Interact Club at the annual Seabrook Middle School Induction Ceremony last Tuesday at the school’s cafeteria. Community service was the focus at the potluck event that included a presentation of pins and membership cards.

“The greatest value is to provide an opportunity for these young people to realize that, while they are young, they can serve and be part of the community,” said Rotary Club of Hampton President Barbara Lizotte. “This event is important because young people sometimes feel that they’re not always appreciated and recognized for the good work they do, and this shows them that they are part of the community.”

Seabrook Middle School’s Interact Club is the first middle school chapter of Interact in New Hampshire. Lizotte said her organization sponsors three student Interact clubs in SAU 21: at Winnacunnet High School, Lincoln Akerman School, and Seabrook Middle School, along with Hampton Academy in SAU 90.

SUPPORTS DAYS OF WARMING

The Rotary Club of Ogunquit served a lunch of chicken pot pie, coleslaw and Valentine’s Day cupcakes to more than 60 senior citizens at the Wells-Ogunquit Center at Moody on Valentine’s Day weekend.

These Days of Warming are held every Saturday during January and February; each sponsored by a different group or organization in the local area. The Ogunquit Rotary Club has done its bit on this same weekend for the past four years, and this year’s event was one of the best. The seniors who partook of the meal expressed sincere gratitude, and the members who served the food had the satisfaction of having brightened the day for others. Just a small example of a service being beneficial to all concerned!

HOSTS MAINE CHILDREN'S CANCER PROGRAM FUNDRAISER

More than 300 people turned out for the annual Maine Children’s Cancer Program fundraiser at DiMillo’s hosted by the Rotary Club of Portland Sunrise.  This year the boat was too small, as Party With a Purpose broke its fundraising record, bringing in $40,000 for the cancer treatment and support program.  DiMillo's once again generously rolled out a lavish spread of delicious food choices accompanied by marvelous wine and beer samplings.

There was a wide variety of amazing live and silent auction items. The live auction included an enthusiastic bidding war for an African Safari that sold for $4300.  Other highlights of the live auction included - a week's stay for 2-3 couples at a 17th-century home in a romantic Italian hilltop village, a cocktail or dinner cruise for up to 20 on board a fully-restored 1965 yacht built by the Henry C. Grebe Company and a weekend getaway at the historic Colonial Inn in Ogunquit, including two rooms for two nights, dinner at an area restaurant, and four tickets to a local show.

NEW EYES

In 1991, Pric and Andy Baillargeon, members of the Rotary Club of Saco Bay, learned about the New Eyes for the Needy program.  Since then, the club continues to sponsor the NEW EYES "glasses for those in need” program (formerly known as NEW EYES FOR THE NEEDY). Old eye glasses and precious metals, such as jewelry (real or costume), old watches, broken jewelry, spare cufflinks, earrings, old silver of all kinds, dentures and used dental gold scrap, prescription and non-prescription sunglasses and safety glasses are items being sought and collected by the club. The club has approximately 20 collection boxes throughout the communities in Biddeford, Saco and Old Orchard Beach. Since the club adopted this program, approximately 1,000 items have been collected and sent annually.

New Eyes is a non-profit volunteer organization founded by Julia Lawrence Terry in 1932. Terry from Short Hills was volunteering at a Red Cross food distribution center in New York City when she learned that some of the Depression-aid recipients could not see well enough to sign for food tickets. Since the beginning, New Eyes has provided clearer vision to over 8 million people in the United States and throughout the world. The metal frames received are sent to a refiner and the income received is used to pay for new prescriptions glasses for indigent Americans. Glasses are also shipped to developing countries. Costume jewelry and silverware are sold, and the proceeds used to provide glasses to the needy.

THE HISTORY OF SAINT MARY EPISCOPAL CHURCH IN FALMOUTH, MAINE

From left to right: Bill Gowen – Club Treasurer with Rev. Nathan W. Ferrell, Rector of the Episcopal Church of Saint Mary in Falmouth, Maine.

John Bundy Brown 1805-1881 who founded J. B. Brown, a real estate company, which is still has a prominent role in the city of Portland, had five children: One of which was John Marshall Brown who studied law at Bowdoin College, received an appointment in 20th Maine Regiment as a First Lieutenant and was Adjutant to General Joshua Chamberlain and distinguished himself in prominent battles of the Civil War including Gettysburg. He retired a Brevet General, returned to Portland, married, and had five children including a daughter, Alida Greely Brown who died in Switzerland at the age of 19.

To honor his daughter’s memory, John commissioned a stone chapel in Falmouth Foreside whose foundation was laid in 1890. The Chapel became the burial place of John Marshall Brown, his wife, and their daughter Alida.

Through subsequent gifts and endowments from the Browns and the Payson Family as well as others, this chapel with the addition of other buildings eventually became the Episcopal Church of Saint Mary in Falmouth, Maine.

The Rotary Club of South Berwick-Eliot
TO HOLD GEOGRAPHY QUIZ NIGHT

Where in the World is Maiti Nepal?

The South Berwick-Eliot Rotary Club’s annual Geography Quiz Night on Friday, March 4th at the Great Works School in South Berwick, Maine, will be in support of Maiti Nepal, an initiative which began a number of years ago to rescue and change the lives of girls who became victims of human trafficking between Nepal and India.

Each year, the South Berwick-Eliot Rotary Club has its Geography Quiz Night to benefit a worthy international project, and this year’s theme will be “Where in the World is Maiti Nepal?”  Teams of 2 adults and 2 students compete in rounds of geography questions in front of an audience in the school gym, for bragging rights and the coveted trophies awarded to the winners and runners-up.  Mike Moloney, a Rotarian from South Berwick and banker with Kennebunk Savings Bank, is a geography whiz in his own right and creates the questions and is a lively emcee and moderator of the competition. There are questions for the students on the teams, questions for the adults, and questions posed to the entire team.  Meanwhile, audience members can also join in as they take part in their own audience competition if they wish.  It is an evening that is fun to watch and everyone comes away from it knowing more about world and local geography.  The funds that are raised from the team sponsorships, additional fundraising by team members to purchase “free passes” for when they are stumped by a question, raffles, silent auction and refreshment sales, go to the international project selected.  And this year’s project helps fight child slavery.
