Did you know that in the world there are approximately 1.4 billion people who are employed but live on less than $1.25 a day?

October is Rotary’s Economic and Community Development month.

“Rotary supports investment in people to create measurable and enduring economic improvements in their lives and communities”. As a member of Rotary International you have an opportunity to make a difference in communities all over the world in this area of focus by promoting projects that support community development. Projects can include vocational training, commercial loans, and providing people with equipment. Members can work to strengthen local workers and community leaders, particularly women, in impoverished communities.  This will help reduce poverty in underserved communities through training, well-paying jobs, and access to financial management institutions. Remember, “It’s not just a hand-out.  It’s a hand-up”.

Rotary’s goals in Community and Economic Development include…
  • Building the capacity of entrepreneurs, community leaders, local organizations and community networks to support economic development in impoverished communities
  • Developing opportunities for productive work
  • Reducing poverty in underserved communities
  • Supporting studies for career-minded professionals related to economic and community development
Thank you for making a difference,

Sheila Rollins, District Governor

     District History Trivia
This Month’s District History Question:  Rotary has had assigned certain months to focus on a particular Rotary program.  These monthly focuses are no longer listed in the District Directories but are on the District History page.  This month has three questions.  1.  Can you list the months and focus for each month?  2.  Who can make these monthly focus changes?  3.  When did they last change?

Check out the District History pages for the answers.  Send your answers to me at mawilliamspdg@comcast.net along with your name and the name of your Rotary Club.  The answer will be in next month’s newsletter along with the name of the person(s) to give me the correct answer along with their club name.  If you have any District History information, please share it with me so it can be posted to the District History page on our District’s Website.

The District Vision and Planning Committee is hosting the 7th in our series of Vision to Plan Workshops on Thursday, October 29, 2015 .  PRE-REGISTRATION (not payment) IS REQUIRED!

The Session will continue the work done at the last workshop, to help clubs improve the knowledge and skills needed to take a club’s vision and develop a strategic plan.   We will continue to focus our efforts to help tie Rotary Club Central Goal Setting and Club Leadership Development planning work into the vision to plan (V2P) process .   The Committee has developed training tools and documents to help you learn and effectively run such a process.

Event Details are:

Optional Social Hour 4:45 – 5:45 PM:   Snow Squall Restaurant, 18 Ocean St., South Portland, Maine 207-799-0811, with cash bar and appetizers for purchase.  This has become a well attended social.

Workshop 6:00 – 8:00 PM, So. Portland Housing Authority, 100 Waterman Drive, S. Portland, Maine (around the corner from the Snow Squall).   Located just over the Casco Bay Bridge from Portland.

The registration cost of $9 (check made out to District 7780, or cash) covers a light meal and supplies. It can be paid at the door or, preferably in advance.  Mail to:  11 Todd Road, Cape Elizabeth, ME. 04107.  The invitation is open to clubs whether or not they have done a formal District vision event.

Session Details:   We hope that representatives will bring their club ideas for 1 or 2 areas of focus, which are being formulated for this year.   We will conduct exercises whereby we work as teams to develop goals and objectives for some of these focus areas.   Membership, Fundraising, Community and International Service Projects, Public Relations and the Foundation will be part of the hands on work.  We will tie V2P concepts to your Rotary clubs planning process.

On another note, we are interested in supporting individual clubs with either an initial vision session, a second vision event (as recently done at SPCE Rotary in May ), or a club planning workshop, assembly or discussion.   Contact us for details.

Sincerely,

The District Vision and Planning Committee
Calling All Rotarians!
Want to learn more about Rotary?

Attend RLI (Rotary Leadership Institute)

Why?
RLI is open to any and all Rotarians.  It is not just for club officers.  It is to help all Rotarians have a better understanding of the big world of Rotary and what it does outside of our own clubs.  Meet members from other clubs, districts and learn the potential for service around the world.

RLI is a recommended unofficial affiliate of Rotary International, but not an official program of R. I.  There are three parts offered Part I, Part II, Part III plus a Graduate course.  However, parts must be taken in order as each part builds on the previous one.

When and where are the courses held?
Courses are held at various locations throughout the year in New England and further if you want to travel to accommodate the Rotary clubs in the member districts. Any Rotarian may take a course in any location. All courses start with registration at 7:30am. Classes are from 8:00am to 3:30pm. The registration fees can vary from site to site but they all cover the same thing – course workbook containing session program agendas, and course outlines and materials plus breakfast, lunch and coffee breaks.

What are the teaching methods?
The Institute believes in course sessions with as much discussion/participation as possible. Lectures are strictly limited. Course methods include discussion groups, role-playing, problem solving workshops and creating projects.  Everyone participates during the sessions.

If you want to stay local the first one coming up that is fairly close to our District is on –

Regional Zone Institute
GRADUATES DISTRICT 7780 GOVERNOR-ELECT

One of Rotary’s major strengths is leadership development.  Rotary leaders around the globe receive mentoring and focused leadership training, coaching, finance, fundraising, goal-setting and planning, membership growth, peace and conflict resolution, presentation skills, and a host of other areas.  Continuing education helps Rotarians serve their communities.  Their journey is supported by Past District Governors, Past Presidents of Rotary International and the Rotary Foundation, and staff members from RI in Evanston IL.

Each year Rotary conducts regional Zone Institutes to train its leaders: our Zone 24-32 encompasses much of the eastern US seaboard along with Canada, a portion of Russia, two French islands and Bermuda.  Rotary District Governors, Governors-Elect, Governor Nominees and future leaders gather to share best-practices and to be inspired, educated and challenged to think about new ways to help Rotary grow.

District 7780 Governor-Elect Marge Barker recently graduated from the Zone Institute training program, and is seen here with her daughter Jeanette Shade.

Rotary’s leadership training is world-class: techniques learned can be helpful in members’ business, community and non-profit work for a lifetime.

Crutches 4 Africa

The district committee for Crutches 4 Africa is proud to announce that we will be sending our fifth (5) container to Africa in either November or December.  Starting in 2011 we have sent a container each calendar year since then.  No other district has sent more than one.  We are still looking for additional wheelchairs to be included in the upcoming shipment.  If you have a wheelchair(s) to donate please let us know.  Consider contacting nursing homes because they often times wheelchairs in storage.  Families will leave them with the nursing home after the resident leaves.  We are still accepting other mobility devices including walkers, crutches, canes, leg and foot braces and baby joggers.

If your club is not involved in this worthy project and would like some information or have a speaker at your club please contact Dennis Robillard 207-468-0443 or risc@maine.rr.com.

Vocational Training Team
Mental Health Services Outreach to Argentina-Uruguay in March 2016

Vocational Training Team (VTT) outreach is a new focus of Rotary International and has two major goals (1) professionals improve their own vocational skills and/or provide professional training to others abroad; and (2) provide sustainable measurable outcomes in a specific field.

A Vocational Training Team has its similarities and differences from the Rotary Group Study Exchange (GSE) the District has done in the past.

District 7780 will be sending a Vocational Training Team going to Argentina-Uruguay (District 4945) in 2015-2016. We are planning to go in March 2016 for two weeks when the temperature is around 65-80°F. The team will consist of four Rotarians or non-Rotarians but must have a Rotary team leader, all of whom are qualified mental health professionals.

This year’s Vocational Training Team will address mental health services to teenagers and adolescents. Team members will travel to Argentina in March 2016 and spend time with their peers, sharing ideas and practices. Argentina is mostly known for its tango and has a rich culture composed of a mix of ethnic groups mostly influenced by Italian and Spanish immigrants.

The trip will be fully funded by the District (except Visa, immunizations, additional trips). The members of the team will need to pack clothing, some money, insurance, home club banners, and do work that makes a difference and inspires others to do the same.

In District 7780 we want to hear all about the trip from our VTT; therefore, the team will be at our District Conference at Tarry-A-While Resort on June 10-12, 2016.

How can you assist?
  • The District will be interviewing candidates after receiving the application form by November 15, 2015.
  • The application form can be found in the left hand column of the District 7780 homepage under Download.
  • Please get the word out to mental health professionals who have a BS or higher in Social Work.
Contact Kerstin Kirchner, District Outreach Chair, at kerstinkrchnr@gmail.com or 207.807.0367 for more information.

SUPPORTS CRUTCHES 4 AFRICA

On Friday 9/25, 8th grade students from Sacred Heart School assisted Rotarian Dave Anderson and Doug Cain from the UPS Store, with loading a van full of mobility devices (MDs), which was then driven up by Dave and Doug to the warehouse in Biddeford, Maine. On this one particular trip, they delivered 160 crutches, 40 walkers, and 35 canes to be shipped out to Africa in November or December.  This was only one of several deliveries that Dave has made to the warehouse over the years.  Since the Crutches 4 Africa program was first introduced to our club, he has spear-headed this effort and has kept it an ongoing project in our club.

Doug Cain (right), owner of the UPS store and Dennis Robillard (left), coordinator for the Maine program, stand next to one of the boxes that will soon be heading to Africa.

Portland Rotary Club
CELEBRATES 100 YEARS WITH A CENTENNIAL GALA

Centennial…definition…a one hundredth anniversary.
Gala…definition…a social occasion with special entertainments or performances. “A black-tie event that begins with a cocktail reception and flapper dresses”

Portland Rotary celebrated our 100th anniversary with an amazing party and event on Saturday, September 12 at Holiday Inn by the Bay with nearly 250 people in attendance. Lee Nelson, Anchor of WCSH6 was the master of ceremonies. President Bowen Depke welcomed everyone, shared remarks and introduced dignitaries. A wonderful video of our history with photos of businesses that were original members, projects of the club, and interviews with members was shown. Senator Angus King was the guest speaker and was awarded a Paul Harris Fellow. Other Paul Harris Fellow awards were also presented to Enoch Barton and posthumously to Vince McKusick.

Shelia Rollins, District Governor attended and shared congratulations from the District and RI. Several past District Governors and past Presidents were in attendance. We feasted on filet and Lobster Pie (home-made by the master chef). Dances of the era including the Charleston were taught and many danced the night way. A big thank you to Kathy Grammer, Mike Fortunato and Christine Force who started planning the gala nearly two years and their committee for a wonderful celebration.

Portland Sunrise Rotary Club
SUPPORTS LITERACY

"To celebrate Literacy Month, the Rotary Club of Portland Sunrise recently completed their 4th USA Map for schools in the Portland area.  Club members gathered together to help paint a United States map on Saturday, Sept.12, on the playground at the Easter Seals NorthStar Learning Center on Presumpscot Street in Portland.  Rotarians were joined by two of the school's teachers and a reporter from The Forecaster who all joined in the fun.  Easter Seals Executive Director Gail Wilkerson stopped by to add a little paint and to thank the club for their support."

"The Rotary Club of Portland Sunrise promotes literacy all year by purchasing a book every week, signed by our speakers, for the Portland Library.  In addition we are making literacy matter at the Portland Free Clinic.  The kids at the Clinic are loving our book crate and "going" places they never dreamed of before. They get to visit the doctor and go home with a book of their choice.  “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go.” Dr. Seuss.

Friedrich Wilhelm von Kannewurff, 83, passed away on Friday, Aug. 14, 2015.

Fred was born on Sept. 30, 1931 in Baitkowen, East Prussia. The von Kannewurff family estate became a collective farm in Poland after World War II, and Fred’s studies turned to business. He learned to love international travel during his school years at the Schloss Schule Salem in Baden-Wurtenberg, Germany, Gordenstoun School in Elgin, Scotland and Dartmouth College in New Hampshire. His career in international sales at Texaco spanned four decades, and the globe.

Fred was a Knight in the Order of St. John and a committed member of Rotary International. He enjoyed jogging around the Imperial Palace in Tokyo and the Botanical Gardens in Singapore. He also loved the mountains and spent as much time as he could hiking and climbing. The White Mountains drew him to Bridgton.
