February is Rotary’s Peace and Conflict Prevention/Resolution Month.

As you all know, this is one of Rotary’s six areas of focus. What you may not know is that our involvement is not just about Peace Scholars. Members also pursue projects to address the underlying structural causes of conflict, including poverty, inequality, ethnic tension, lack of access to education, and unequal distribution of resources. Sixty million people are displaced by armed conflict or persecution, and 90 percent of armed-conflict casualties are civilians, half of them children.

Visit https://www.rotary.org/myrotary/en/learning-reference/about-rotary/peace-and-conflict-prevention-resolution where you will learn about some of the Rotary peace initiatives such as the historic collaboration between Rotary and the Peace Corps and the new funding goal set for Rotary Peace Centers. Read Peace Fellow Ali Reza Eshraghi’s thoughts on today’s Iran and about protecting U.S. diplomats in areas of political strife …and much more.

As a reminder, please mark February 20th in your calendar and join your fellow District 7780 Rotarians for the World Peace and Understanding Dinner for what is sure to be a memorable evening on Rotary’s birthday!

This month’s “What’s Your Story?” theme is Peace and Conflict Resolution.  Submit a story about your club’s involvement in this area of focus and your club’s name will go into a drawing to win two free tickets to the District Conference.  This month’s deadline for submission is February 29th.

Thank you for all that you do!

Sheila

      District History Trivia

There were no guesses again this month!

Last Month’s Question:   We are going to deviate a little from District History to our Future History of the District.  We now have three District Governors lined up.

  1. What are the names of the next three District Governors?
  2. What years will they serve?
  3. What club are they from?
  4. Have their clubs had a District Governor before and how many?
The Answers –

  1. Marge Barker 2016-2017, member of South Portland-Cape Elizabeth Club, four governors before Marge
  2. David Underhill 2017-2018, member of the Portsmouth Club, four governors before David
  3. John LoBosco 2018-19, member of South Portland-Cape Elizabeth Club, five governors before John

Will your club have the 2019-2010 District Governor?

This Month’s District History Question:  I apologize but due to circumstances beyond my control there is no history question for February.  I will be back on track in March.

WORLD PEACE AND UNDERSTANDING DINNER

This is just a reminder that our World Peace and Understanding Dinner is just around the corner. We’ll be gathering at the Marriott Sable Oaks in South Portland on Saturday, February 20th to celebrate Rotary’s birthday and the committee has put together an entertaining and informative program featuring a keynote presentation by Rotary Peace Scholar, Dr. Francesa Giovannini, several important awards, and music by “Hobson’s Choice”.

Some of the most important issues facing the world today are nuclear disarmament, arms control and regional nuclear cooperation in Southeast Asia. Our keynote speaker, Francesca Giovannini, D.Phil., is the Senior Program Officer for Global Security and International Affairs at the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. She is also an Associate to the Project on Managing the Atom at the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs and an Affiliate to the Center for International Security and Cooperation (CISAC) at Stanford University, where she was previously a MacArthur Nuclear Postdoctoral Fellow. She has served as a Post-Conflict State-Building Consultant for the United Nations in the Fiji Islands, Beirut, Turkey, and Ghana and is an authority on the emerging regional nuclear architectures in Southeast Asia, Latin America, and Europe. One of her latest publications is titled, “Understanding the ‘Proliferation’ of Nuclear Cooperation: An Alternative Theoretical Framework and Its Implications for Regional Efforts”. Her list of credentials and accomplishments is quite lengthy and very impressive. You’ll be glad you attended.

We will be honoring several new members who have fully embraced the Rotary spirit and have “gone above and beyond”.  In addition we will be presenting Rotary’s most distinguished award, the “Rotary International Service Above Self Award” to two deserving Rotarians.

Music will be provided by “Hobson’s Choice”, a piano, bass, and guitar trio performing light jazz, blues, and popular tunes.

A DISCUSSION ABOUT THE RED RIBBON COMMITTEE

Bill is sitting at his kitchen counter working on the family computer and writing a speech.  From the other room he hears: “Dad, where's the computer?”

Bill yells back:  “Andy, it's right here.  I'm using it.”

Andy enters the room and says: “Since when do you use our computer, I really need it?”

“Sure, playing an online game?”

“Well, yeah, what are you using it for anyway?”

“I have to introduce a new Rotarian into our club so I am trying to come up with an appropriate quote. How does this sound from Margaret Meade?:  ‘Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed citizens can change the world, indeed, it's the only thing that ever has.’”

“Not bad, but Margaret Meade?”

“Ok, Ok, how about this one I used for my last new member intro from Edmund Burke:  ‘The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good people to do nothing.’"

CHUCKY'S FIGHT PLUNGE

On January 22nd, just after sunrise, five Hampton Rotarians and DG Sheila Rollins jumped into the frigid Atlantic Ocean.  Crazy?  Maybe.  For a great cause?  Absolutely!

The Hampton Rotary Club has been a long-time supporter of Chucky's Fight, a local organization started by Chuck Rosa, a man who has been affected by tragedy, not once but twice, by the death of two sons due to addiction.

Every day, regardless of weather, Chucky takes a dip into the ocean to be nearer to his sons. (read his story at chuckysfight.com)

After the plunge and an inspirational quote from Club President Barbara Lizotte, everyone was invited back to Chucky's house to warm up and enjoy some delicious turkey chili.

STUDENT OF THE MONTH RECOGNITION PROGRAM

Five years ago during the summer of 2011, the Saco Bay Rotary Club Board of Directors approved a new program designed to recognize and honor worthy area high school students from Thornton Academy, Old Orchard Beach High School and Biddeford High School. Each school then was approached with the proposal to determine their willingness to participate in the program.  All 3 schools enthusiastically endorsed the program and agreed to participate. As a result, this is the 5th year that our Club has recognized and honored a total of 35 outstanding students. Students enrolled in the Center of Technology in Biddeford are also included in this program.

TRAVIS MILLS . . . AS TOUGH AS THEY COME!

Travis came to speak to the Sanford Springvale Rotary Club today. He started his speech with 1. I'm awesome, 2. I'm humble. He proceeded to tell us his life story… so far. His story included his birth, joining the Army, meeting his wife and having a baby girl, right up to dropping his pack on an IED on his third tour in Afghanistan, and how he lives as a quadriplegic amputee. He had us eating out of his hand. (Ha-ha, his joke). He likes to "disarm" his audience with humor. He had the 60+ people gathered in stitches. Local Sanford resident Adrian Mauris was there with Travis the day he lost his arms and legs in Afghanistan, and he was also with us today!!

Past District Governor Elias Thomas III presented SSG Travis Mills with a Paul Harris Fellow, a high honor, including a thousand dollar donation to the Rotary Foundation in his name.

HOLIDAY BASKETS AND THE SOUND OF CHRISTMAS

Wells Rotarians and Interact Students wrapped holiday baskets for the “Giving Tree” program, which asked for donations that would be included in the baskets intended for Meals on Wheels recipients.  Once the baskets were all put together and wrapped, the Rotarians and Interact Students then delivered them to the MOW recipients and serenaded them with Christmas Carols.  A great time was had by all!

Westbrook-Gorham Rotary Club
RIVER ROAD ARCHAEOLOGICAL DIG

Members of the Windham Historical Society entertained the club with the story of the recent archaeological dig at the suspected location of the Provisional Fort of Windham which was erected on the top of the highest hill in Windham at what is now the intersection of River Road and Anderson Road in South Windham. This fort was built to protect the families of Westbrook and South Windham from constant threat during the Indian wars in the period of 1744 – 1784. The first school in Windham and a church were built inside the fort.

In the front lawn of the Parson Smith House trenches one meter wide by four meters long were dug carefully and yielded artifacts typical of the colonial period including pipes, fragments of pottery, nails, and parts of a flintlock rifle.

The Westbrook Historical Society working closely with the Maine Historic Heritage Commission will come back in April of this year and dig more trenches before work being done to lower the River Road at that point to improve sight lines.
