October!
Cool nights, crisp days, bright sunshine, vivid blue skies, apples, stunning foliage, quiet walks in the woods, squirrels packing away acorns, pumpkins, cider, and pumpkin spice everything. It’s a beautiful time…
We hope to see you all at RotaryRocks! “A District Conference Like No Other!”, Saturday, October 5th, at the Abromson Center, University of Southern Maine, in Portland. Come for an hour or come for the day. Bring your family, friends, and all your potential Rotarians. You and they will love it.
October is Rotary’s Economic and Community Development month. Every community has different needs and offers us different opportunities for service. Whether your area of interest is your home community or a remote village somewhere in the developing world, Rotary provides a vehicle for you to help others who find themselves in less fortunate circumstances.
Together, we make amazing things happen. A sampling of the good we do:
Breaking the cycle of poverty for women;
Skills development, business training, and microloans; and,
Water for agriculture and improved agricultural techniques.
Question: What new projects can you and your club do to improve your, or other, communities?
October 24th is World Polio Day. It’s a global day to raise awareness and resources in support of the effort to immunize all children and eradicate polio. Our three goals for this day are to:
Learn, become better informed, and make polio a subject of conversation;
Share awareness of Polio and of our efforts to eradicate it; and,
Raise funds to support our efforts.
Question: What World Polio Day recognition events does your club have planned?
Please keep on “Thinking Outside The Box” and finding creative ways to increase the size of our Rotary footprint of goodness! And, please involve more potential Rotarians in your good work!

Call for Nominations
This year clubs in our district will have the opportunity to not only nominate a candidate for District Governor but also a representative to the Council on Resolutions and the Council on Legislation, and, for clubs in York and Oxford County, a member of the Finance Committee.
We all know how important the office of District Governor is and the Rotarian selected this year will serve as our DG in 2022-23. Speaking from personal experience, serving as your District Governor is not only an honor, it is also a distinct pleasure. You meet so many new people and have such interesting experiences. Do not be intimidated by the idea that it is too much work or too difficult. Ask any Past District Governor and I venture that they will all tell you how rewarding it was and how much fun they had. A specific "Call for Nominations" document for DG along with the club resolution recommending a candidate plus several other relevant documents with more information about serving as a DG can be found on the District website under Downloads in the folder labeled "2019 Nominating Materials." The deadline for nominations is November 1, 2019.
In addition, clubs in York and Oxford county can nominate candidates for a three-year term on the Finance Committee beginning July 1, 2020. Again, the deadline is November 1, 2019 and more information including the club resolution proposing the candidate can be found in the 2019 Nominating Materials folder.
Finally, every three years, each Rotary district selects a Past District Governor to serve a three year term on the Council on Resolutions and the Council on Legislation commencing July 1, 2020. This representative reviews and votes on changes to Rotary International’s governing documents. Once again, the deadline for club resolutions proposing candidates is November 1, 2019 and more information including a copy of the resolution form and a document on selection of a Council representative can be found in the 2019 Nominating Materials Folder.

Polio Plus - October 2019
24 October is WORLD POLIO DAY
World Polio Day is a time for Rotarians all over the world to raise awareness about our efforts to eradicate polio for good. In the past week news has come from the Philippines that a three-year-old girl has contracted a circulating vaccine derived poliovirus type 2 {cVDPV2} along with a possible second case pending confirmation. No cases of wild poliovirus have been discovered and the Philippines’ polio free status is not at risk, stated Michael K. McGovern, International Polio Plus Chair.

Also, I have about 40 small cans for change [$$] with “Help Us Eradicate Polio” if any Clubs out there need some.
The District International Service Committee is now accepting applications for this year's International Outreach to Cali, Columbia.
The deadline to submit your application is OCTOBER 14th.
The trip will be taking place end of January/beginning of February for approximately 10-12 days.

October 25-27, 1991 - Verrillo’s Conference, Portland, ME; District Governor was Robert Patten. This was a day time conference. No particular theme.
October 31-November2, 2003 – Montreal Marriott Hotel, Chateau Champlain, Montreal, Canada; District Governor Trisha Hunter. This was a joint conference with District 7930. First joint conference as District 7780. No particular theme.
October 14-17, 2004 – MBNA Conference Facilities Northport, ME; District Governor Robert Jacobson. No particular theme.
September 22-25, 2005 – The Balsams Resort, Dixville Notch, NH. District Governor Robert Laux. We had not had a conference here since we split from District 779. Theme – “Onward to a New Century of Service.”
October 5, 2019 – October 5, 2019.Our second one day conference to be held at the Abromson Community Education Center at the University of Southern Maine, Portland, ME. District Governor Andrew Glazier. A one day conference but our first opened to the public! Theme “ROTARY ROCKS!” You still have time to register!

MAINE STATE REP VISITS CLUB
Maine State Representative Chloe Maxim (shown above with President Lorraine Faherty) spoke to the Damariscotta-Newcastle Club about what it is like to be a new representative in state legislature. Her enthusiasm, even at 7 am, was overwhelming!
CLUB FILLS BACKPACKS FOR SCHOOL KIDS
President Elect Roberta McLaughlin and Past President Jane Gravel helped prepare backpacks full of school supplies for children at 5 schools in AOS93.
CLUB PROVIDES BREAKFAST FOR BIKEMAINE CYCLISTS
Thirty-three Rotarians from the Damariscotta-Newcastle Club served 501 cyclists from BikeMaine breakfast in lieu of their regular meeting on October 10th. Volunteers even included a District AG and a president of a nearby club. ANNUAL APPLE SALE FUNDRAISER
The annual Exeter Rotary Apple Sale fundraiser for scholarships was a great success again this year, selling out quickly due to the hard work of members, friends and the great weather!
The Rotary Club of Hampton A BUSY TIME FOR FUNDRAISING!

Coming off of back to back weekends in early September for their two biggest fundraisers; first manning the beer tent for 3 days at the Hampton Beach Seafood Festival, and then again the following weekend at the Ragnar Reach the Beach Relay Race, Hampton Rotarians have just a few weeks to gear up for two more upcoming fundraising events.
On October 6th, Hampton Rotarians will meet up at 6 am to help to conduct traffic and yet again man another beer tent for the Loco Races, Rockfest Half Marathon and 5k at Hampton Beach. Then the very next day, they'll hold their 20th Annual Golf Tournament at the Portsmouth Country Club (see flier below) on Monday, October 7th.
All four fundraising events will allow the Hampton Rotary Club to continue their charitable giving in their community and globally.
The Kittery Rotary After-Hours Club
KITTERY READS PROGRAM: KINDERGARTEN STUDENTS RECEIVE NEW BOOKS
The Kittery After Hours Club’s “Kittery Reads” literacy initiative continues to have a positive impact on students in the community. The club is proud to continue the program, started as a District Grant in 2016, heading in to it’s fourth year!
In what has become a start of school year tradition, members of the Kittery After Hours Club were on hand at Horace Mitchell School to greet incoming kindergarten students and their parents and present students with a new book of their very own to take home. On September 3rd & 4th kindergarten students visited the school to meet with their teachers.
Following their teacher meetings, students were excited to choose a book from a selection of titles that included “How I Became a Pirate”, “Great Big Things”, “Flotsam”, and “Chef Sheldon’s Birthday Breakfast”.
A primary goal of this program is to encourage family reading time and to support that goal a brochure was provided to the parents developed with school staff input. Members also handed out book marks with the Kittery Reads logo and the Rotary 4-Way Test on the back.
The Club thanks the Kittery Trading Post for their generous and continued support of this program.
KITTERY READS PROGRAM: NEW COOKBOOKS FOR ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
In May, the Kittery After Hours Club’s lost charter member and dear friend Cindy Kuliga after a courageous battle with cancer.
Cindy’s infectious laughter, sharp wit, and fun-loving spirit have been greatly missed by our club. It was clear we wanted to find a very special way to memorialize this amazing woman. Cindy was known for her love of family, the beach, gardening and feeding the masses. Her favorite Rotary projects were those involving books and kids in our community. She loved visiting the school to present books to the kindergarten students, handing out books at the holiday parade, and reading to students whenever the opportunity was presented.
Working with the staff at Horace Mitchell Primary School in Kittery, the club determined that the best way to pay our respects to Cindy’s love of books and food would be to establish a bookshelf in her memory. Not just any bookshelf though, but one stocked with cookbooks donated by the club and community members in Cindy’s honor. And so we are very proud to present “Cindy’s Cookbook Shelf” now permanently installed in the library. A plaque on the top of the shelf, and a label on the front page of each book, states, “Presented to the students of Horace Mitchell Primary School by the Kittery Rotary After Hours Club in honor of Cindy Kuliga.”
The Club would like to thank Mr. Wayne Harris of Kittery for his craftsmanship in building the shelf and the help of school librarian Anne Masury for her assistance in putting the plan in to motion.

INTERACT STUDENTS VOLUNTEER AT FAIR
Oxford Hills Interact Advisor/Rotarian Tina Fox draws on a chalk board at the Common Ground Fair on Friday, Sept. 20. Tina, along with new member Jen Sherbinksi, Beth Abbott and Patty Rice took fourteen Interact students to volunteer for 4 hours in the children’s area for the fair as a community service project.
COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECT RESTORES CEMETERY
The Rotary Club of Oxford Hills held a community service hands-on project working in a local cemetery to restore Veteran’s stones and do some much needed brush clearing. They hauled 7 loads of brush off and helped restore multiple stones with help from expert Deb Carrol.

FLAGS FOR HEROES
A community person's response to the Portland Rotary's Flags for Heroes- Remembering our community heroes at the September 11-17, 2019 exhibit, a display in honor of the the memory and victims of September 11, 2001:
"Last Thursday afternoon I was trailing through the crowds at the Maine Mall and was stunned by the sight of a small forest of American flags gently stirring beneath the sky light. Thinking it was a 9-11 memorial, I wandered into the center of it, joining others who were quietly walking, crouching to read the plaques, or simply standing there, enveloped in the red, white, and blue stillness. I discovered that it was the Flags for Heroes Exhibit, sponsored by the Portland Rotary. I learned that each flag represents a hero who has made a contribution to their community, including educators, therapists, medical personnel and first responders, police and firefighters, business owners - 100 names, 100 flags, 100 thank-yous to those who have given of themselves. This was a particularly moving experience for me, discovering it on the day after 9-11 and the loss that day represents. I want to thank Charlie Frair, Paul Tully, Paul Gore and all the Rotarians and volunteers who put this wonderful event together. I won’t forget it." Written by Joanna, in Tenants Harbor, Maine.

September District Report
We are hoping to send a large delegation to RotaryRocks! in October. Closer to home, Basic Needs spear-headed a drive to contribute badly needed diapers, baby wipes and baby monitors to Crossroads House.
The club gave away nearly $9,000 dollars in August. Bill Hurley received a $2,500 William Cash Committee check for a Cross Roads House project to build sleeping quarter storage shelves. Another $2,500 cash grant went to Stanford Cross for the 13th Annual Black New England Conference. Ramona Dow and Cathy Nickerson got $1,000 to support “Purses for a Purpose.”
Some $2,122 of Jeremy Alex Fund money will fund a Portsmouth Music and Arts Center scholarship. And $300 from the fund goes to Operation Warm to provide winter coats for the needy. We also learned that the Rotary Foundation received $5,000 to honor Past District Governor and Club President James Labrie.
Like other clubs, we ramped up support for victims of Hurricane Dorian. Past District Governor Dave Underhill donated his Red Sox tickets which yielded $325 at auction. Not to be outdone, Eric Wienrieb, a Yankees fan, donated his tickets that commanded $130.
With better weather, we finished painting at the John Paul Jones House, a project started in the waning days of Queen Cleo’s reign.
Further afield, the club will send members to Belize next month to help a Friends Forever water project there. More Rotarians travel to India in 2020.

Guest speakers for the period included a wide variety of civic leaders. Rotary Foundation Trustee and RI Director Mike McGovern spoke about RI’s Polio Plus effort. Mike is a past district governor and South Portland -Cape Elizabeth Club member. Portsmouth Rotary has committed to raising $5,000 for World Polio Day next month.
Retiring Music Hall EO Patricia Lynch visited…UNH President James Dean was another in a growing list of distinguished educators who have shared lunch with us.
Dan Weeks, director of development for Market Energy, painted a bleak picture of Climate Change and its negative impact on New Hampshire’s environment. The provocative program contrasted with Portsmouth Parking Director Benjamin Fletcher’s presentation. The always touchy and complex topic drew some spirited questions. And we have only just begun welcoming Presidential candidates to our podium.
The Rotary Club of Saco Bay Sunset
GROWING UP ROTARY
Chase Walker has been associated with Rotary since the 8th grade as a member of the Loranger Middle School Interact Club. When he entered Old Orchard Beach High School he joined the Interact Club and the RC of Saco Bay Sunset. He serves on the board of directors as a co-secretary of the club.
Chase is a Paul Harris member and regularly contributes to the foundation. He was named Rotarian of the Year from the club for the 2016-17 year. He is very proud of his membership in Rotary as can be seen by his new license plate.

20th Annual Golf Tournament
The Wells Rotary Club held our 20th Annual “Chuck Cumming Memorial” Golf Tournament on Friday, September 6th. It was the largest field of golfers we’ve had in the history of the tournament! Special thanks to our Tournament Chair Rick Coyne, Barry Wolfson and the myriad of volunteers that made the event happen!

PIN PRESENTATION TO CLUB'S NEWEST MEMBER
On Sept. 9th, longtime Rotarian David Kitchen presented a Rotary pin to Yarmouth’s newest member, his daughter Sadie, who has already undertaken to serve as liaison to Yarmouth High School’s Interact Club.
Updates and short articles with images or videos, and the names of new members and those who have passed, may be submitted to our Newsletter Editor, Deb Marsolais, at deb.marsolais@comcast.net to be included in our Monthly Newsletter. The District Newsletter is a means of communicating to other clubs in our district; items of interest, upcoming events, fundraisers, opportunities of service, or member news.
