Rotary District 7780 and Friends Forever Present a Uganda Celebration!
Where: 3s Artspace, 319 Vaughan Street, Portsmouth NH 03801
When: Labor Day Monday, September 7, 2015 - 3:00 pm until 5:00 pm
Who: All Rotary members from District 7780 and all community members are cordially invited!
This will be the culmination and celebration of an 18-day intensive education program, through the partnership of Rotary International, Friends Forever and Youth Passionate Organization (YPO), a Ugandan non-governmental agency, along with the Kajjansi Rotary Club of Kampala, Uganda.
Ten Ugandan young leaders, two team leaders, and one Kajjansi Rotarian are receiving training in leadership, peace and conflict resolution in Seacoast New Hampshire and Southern Maine. This Labor Day Celebration event, part of a Rotary International Global Grant, came together as a result of a relationship between YPO, Friends Forever, and Rotary.
YPO uses music and dance as an integral part of their culture, their common bond. By performing their different tribal dances, young troubled youth are drawn to an environment where learning music and dance can change their lives. The partnership strengthened when a team from Rotary District 7780 took part in a music-based cultural exchange with some of their members two years ago, and on Labor Day these two teams will come together for a joint music and education performance.
The program for this celebration in Portsmouth will include:
Meet and greet our visitors, introductory remarks from Rotary, Friends Forever and YPO leadership.
YPO and the Rotary Music Cultural Exchange team will perform together.
YPO members will give a history and cultural understanding of the different areas of Uganda, share traditional tribal music and dances from the different areas of Uganda, and talk about their hopes for Africa in the future.
Tickets:
Register in advance for this family-friendly event at the District Rotary website link above. Tickets are $10 per person, or only $15 for the entire family.
Available seating will go first to advance registrants; tickets for the remaining seats and standing-room will then be available at the door on September 7.
Block Six, the restaurant at 3s Artspace will be open for those who wish to stay afterwards for fellowship and supper, at their own cost. Groups of eight or more should make an advance reservation by calling 603-294-9060.
Friends Forever, Rotary District 7780 and YPO team members gathered during a cultural exchange trip to Uganda, December 5, 2013.

Bath Sunrise Rotary Club
RECEIVES DISTRICT GRANT
Bath Sunrise Rotary Club has received notification that our $2800+ District Grant request that will help fund a multi-year project for The Bath Area Food Bank has been accepted and increased by $700!!! A huge THANK YOU to member Bob Reed for writing the grant and spending many hours researching the needs of the Food Bank.
The goal of this project is to help the Bath Area Food Bank in executing a plan to create the "Model" Food Pantry "Supermarket" that can be duplicated by other organizations. The Food Bank is in the process of physically transforming into a place where clients choose the items they want in each food category rather than being given a box of food. This has led to less waste and a better experience for the recipients.
The project includes the building and installation of a fresh produce storage and display unit. The Carpentry program of the Bath Regional Career and Technical Center will have students do the final design and construction. Club members will assist with the installation. Club members will also do the maintenance of existing shelf units and perform one day of maintenance annually for the Food Bank.
The first thing we will do is purchase new units to replace the two refrigeration units that won’t last the year. In conjunction with the Food Bank Executive Director, we will set up a replacement schedule for the rest of the 11 units between 9 and 30 years old over a ten year period. Annually we will hold a fundraiser identifying the Food Bank identified as the recipient. A portion of the proceeds will go to the purchase of at least one unit a year.
The Bath Area Food Bank is, directly and indirectly, involved with the Food Pantry, Soup Kitchen, Mobile Food Pantry, Food Pantry at Morse High School located in the school library, Middle School Backpack Program and assistance to homeless teens. The Food Pantry provides food for over 200 families a month. In addition the high school pantry gets visited about 275 times a month. Up until recently the need was increasing at a 10% annual rate. With the cut in SNAP (Food Stamp) benefits they have noticed a substantial jump recently. The Bath Area Food Bank serves 200+ families per month, over 500 people, including homeless high school and middle school students who visit the Food Pantry at Morse High School.
We are proud to say that ALL members of our club will be involved in this project. As a club, we staff the Food Pantry one week every quarter, on Tuesday and Friday evening. We recently volunteered to help them move to their new location. We are excited about being able to be partners with the many hard working volunteers, staff and Board members of the Bath Area Food Pantry.

The Rotary Club of Biddeford-Saco
ROTARIAN OF THE YEAR
Bernice Wood, of Saco & Biddeford Savings Institution, was named Rotarian of the Year of the Biddeford Saco Rotary Club in sincere appreciation and recognition of distinguished service, loyalty and devotion to the ideals of Rotary. Outgoing President Ken Farley stated, “The Rotarian of the Year Award is given to the one person who if absent from the club for the entire year would have negatively impacted our year the most. This was not a hard decision for me. Bernice Wood has been our club Secretary and active member of the board. She is present at nearly every event we have including fundraisers and service projects. I saw Bernice really come alive at the Chamber Business After-Hours. I always knew she was a people person but she brought her game to another level that night. She kept coming up to me and introducing me to new people while promoting Rotary like a great ambassador. The fruits of her labor were sponsoring four new members into our club this year alone. She is truly an MVP for the Rotary year 2014-15.”

The Rotary Club of Portsmouth
HOLDS CHARITY GOLF TOURNAMENT
The Portsmouth Rotary’s 22nd Annual Golf Tournament was held at the beautiful Breakfast Hill Country Club in Greenland, NH on June 19th. This year we had four Rotarian foursomes and some friendly competition.
Committee Chair Andy Chase reported another successful tournament. This year the tournament had 108 golfers and raised $30,135.00. Andy also pointed out that the coveted Rotary Cup has remained in the possession of members of the Portsmouth club. Better luck next year fellow Rotarians.
Those funds helped push the Basic Needs endowment to approximately $140,000.00. Very impressive! A big thank you to the sponsors and volunteers who helped make it happen.
