August is Membership Month, and it’s time to celebrate your Rotary club, your members, and the wonderful things they do in the community and around the world. One way to celebrate is to tell your Rotary story. Telling our stories is one of the most effective ways that we have to recruit new members. There are too many intelligent, educated, involved people who simply have no idea what Rotary is. This is something we need to address. We have heard again and again about communities where, despite all the good work that Rotary clubs do, many people are unaware that those clubs even exist. That’s why it’s important to tell your Rotary story. We have an exciting membership team in place this year that will be visiting clubs in the district to share ideas. The Co-chairs are Dan Allen from the RC of Oxford Hills and Sam Heck from the RC of Portland Sunrise.

Remember…. tell it often and tell it with passion!

Sheila Rollins DG

Here are a few ideas on how you can get started.

  • Exchange ideas. Do you have successful membership strategies that have worked well in your community? Share them on the Membership Best Practices Discussion Group.
  • We Are Rotary. Using the hashtag #WeAreRotary, post photos to Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or Vine of your club members at work in your community or abroad to show how Rotary makes a positive impact in the world.
  • Making a difference. Rotary clubs are known for the high-impact service projects they undertake locally and globally. Share stories about your service projects and how they improve lives on Rotary Showcase. Be sure to follow us on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram to see what Rotary members around the world are doing to celebrate Membership Month.

     District History Trivia
August TRIVIA QUESTION
This month’s District History question

Out of the 99 Past District Governors listed on the District History page plus our sitting Governor which club(s) has had the most District Governors?  How many District Governors have been selected from District 7780 Clubs listed including current and past clubs?

Check out the District History pages for the answers.  Send your answers to me at mawilliamspdg@comcast.net along with your name and the name of your Rotary Club.  The answer will be in next month’s newsletter along with the name of the person(s) to give me the correct answer along with their club name.  If you have any District History information, please share it with me so it can be posted to the District History page on our District’s Website.

No one came up with the answer to last month’s District History trivia question!
Must be the shock of the summer weather!

Last month’s question:

We have just added a new club to District 7780 to bring us up to 40 clubs once again.  What is the new clubs name?  When were they chartered?  Who is their sponsor(s)?

The answer – The newest club added to District 7780 was The Rotary Club of Kittery After Hours.  It was chartered on June 4, 2015.  It was co-sponsored by The Rotary Club of Kittery and The Rotary Club of South Berwick-Eliot.

CONGRATULATIONS to OUR NEWEST CLUB and NEW ROTARIANS!!

TO:  All Club Treasurers
SUBJECT:  Rotary International Dues

There has been some confusion with the RI ANNUAL DUES bill, in that there is no address listed on the invoice as to where to send payment.

The address to send checks for your club's RI dues is:
Rotary International, 14255 Collections Center Drive, Chicago, IL 60693.

Only DISTRICT DUES should be sent to the District.  Your club has not received this bill yet.

2015 Bridge Walk

Join us for the 2nd Annual District 7780 Bridge the Gap event to support Polio Plus.  Walk across the Memorial Bridge from Portsmouth NH to Kittery ME to Bridge the Gap in Polio Plus funding on October 24. We are celebrating the 30th year of this Rotary initiative so bring your club members, friends and family for a fun and informative morning. Again this year, every dollar donated will be matched 2 for 1 by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation so the impact of this event will be magnified!

To date, Rotary has contributed more than $1.4billion and many volunteer hours to help immunize more than two million children in 122 countries.  Come be a part of this worldwide project to eradicate polio in this century.

We will meet at 0830 and then have a short walk onto the Memorial Bridge to show the world our bright red t-shirts and Rotary banners and pose for our picture taken from a drone!  Bring your Rotary flags and country flags to add to the festivities.

We hope to see you October 24th!

Rotary District 7780 and Friends Forever Present a Uganda Celebration!

Where: 3s Artspace, 319 Vaughan Street, Portsmouth NH 03801
When: Labor Day Monday, September 7, 2015 - 3:00 pm until 5:00 pm

Who: All Rotary members from District 7780 and all community members are cordially invited!

This will be the culmination and celebration of an 18-day intensive education program, through the partnership of Rotary International, Friends Forever and Youth Passionate Organization (YPO), a Ugandan non-governmental agency, along with the Kajjansi Rotary Club of Kampala, Uganda.

Ten Ugandan young leaders, two team leaders, and one Kajjansi Rotarian are receiving training in leadership, peace and conflict resolution in Seacoast New Hampshire and Southern Maine.  This Labor Day Celebration event, part of a Rotary International Global Grant, came together as a result of a relationship between YPO, Friends Forever, and Rotary.

YPO uses music and dance as an integral part of their culture, their common bond. By performing their different tribal dances, young troubled youth are drawn to an environment where learning music and dance can change their lives. The partnership strengthened when a team from Rotary District 7780 took part in a music-based cultural exchange with some of their members two years ago, and on Labor Day these two teams will come together for a joint music and education performance.

The program for this celebration in Portsmouth will include:

Meet and greet our visitors, introductory remarks from Rotary, Friends Forever and YPO leadership.

YPO and the Rotary Music Cultural Exchange team will perform together.

YPO members will give a history and cultural understanding of the different areas of Uganda, share traditional tribal music and dances from the different areas of Uganda, and talk about their hopes for Africa in the future.

Tickets:

Register in advance for this family-friendly event at the District Rotary website link above.  Tickets are $10 per person, or only $15 for the entire family.

Available seating will go first to advance registrants; tickets for the remaining seats and standing-room will then be available at the door on September 7.

Block Six, the restaurant at 3s Artspace will be open for those who wish to stay afterwards for fellowship and supper, at their own cost.  Groups of eight or more should make an advance reservation by calling 603-294-9060.

Friends Forever, Rotary District 7780 and YPO team members gathered during a cultural exchange trip to Uganda, December 5, 2013.

Bath Sunrise Rotary Club
RECEIVES DISTRICT GRANT

Bath Sunrise Rotary Club has received notification that our $2800+ District Grant request that will help fund a multi-year project for The Bath Area Food Bank has been accepted and increased by $700!!!  A huge THANK YOU to member Bob Reed for writing the grant and spending many hours researching the needs of the Food Bank.

The goal of this project is to help the Bath Area Food Bank in executing a plan to create the "Model" Food Pantry "Supermarket" that can be duplicated by other organizations. The Food Bank is in the process of physically transforming into a place where clients choose the items they want in each food category rather than being given a box of food. This has led to less waste and a better experience for the recipients.

The project includes the building and installation of a fresh produce storage and display unit.  The Carpentry program of the Bath Regional Career and Technical Center will have students do the final design and construction. Club members will assist with the installation.  Club members will also do the maintenance of existing shelf units and perform one day of maintenance annually for the Food Bank.

The first thing we will do is purchase new units to replace the two refrigeration units that won’t last the year.  In conjunction with the Food Bank Executive Director, we will set up a replacement schedule for the rest of the 11 units between 9 and 30 years old over a ten year period. Annually we will hold a fundraiser identifying the Food Bank identified as the recipient. A portion of the proceeds will go to the purchase of at least one unit a year.

The Bath Area Food Bank is, directly and indirectly, involved with the Food Pantry, Soup Kitchen, Mobile Food Pantry, Food Pantry at Morse High School located in the school library, Middle School Backpack Program and assistance to homeless teens. The Food Pantry provides food for over 200 families a month. In addition the high school pantry gets visited about 275 times a month. Up until recently the need was increasing at a 10% annual rate. With the cut in SNAP (Food Stamp) benefits they have noticed a substantial jump recently. The Bath Area Food Bank serves 200+ families per month, over 500 people, including homeless high school and middle school students who visit the Food Pantry at Morse High School.

We are proud to say that ALL members of our club will be involved in this project. As a club, we staff the Food Pantry one week every quarter, on Tuesday and Friday evening. We recently volunteered to help them move to their new location.  We are excited about being able to be partners with the many hard working volunteers, staff and Board members of the Bath Area Food Pantry.

The Rotary Club of Biddeford-Saco
ROTARIAN OF THE YEAR

Bernice Wood, of Saco & Biddeford Savings Institution, was named Rotarian of the Year of the Biddeford Saco Rotary Club in sincere appreciation and recognition of distinguished service, loyalty and devotion to the ideals of Rotary. Outgoing President Ken Farley stated, “The Rotarian of the Year Award is given to the one person who if absent from the club for the entire year would have negatively impacted our year the most. This was not a hard decision for me.  Bernice Wood has been our club Secretary and active member of the board. She is present at nearly every event we have including fundraisers and service projects. I saw Bernice really come alive at the Chamber Business After-Hours. I always knew she was a people person but she brought her game to another level that night. She kept coming up to me and introducing me to new people while promoting Rotary like a great ambassador. The fruits of her labor were sponsoring four new members into our club this year alone. She is truly an MVP for the Rotary year 2014-15.”

The Rotary Club of Bridgton-Lake Region
16TH ANNUAL DUCK RACE

The Rotary Club of Bridgton-Lake Region held their 16th Annual Duck Race on July 4th.   They had a great turnout and sold tickets for over 1000 ducks.

The 1st Place Winner of this year’s Bridgton-Lake Region Rotary Club’s 4th of July Duck Race was 9-year old Jordan Smith of Bridgton. She is pictured with George Szok, Club President and her sister, accepting her $500 prize.

Second place prize of $250 was claimed by Mark Faunce of Limington, ME, while 3rd place winner of $100 was Tommy Aman of St. Augustine, FL.  All proceeds from this event will help their local communities’ youth, elderly, veterans and others in need of food, utilities, education, and access to health care and other services.

CHANGEOVER CELEBRATION

A changeover celebration was held for the Rotary Club of Bridgton-Lake Region to recognize outgoing President Emma Bodwell and incoming President George Szok.

Everyone enjoyed a slide show of the year’s activities and accomplishments. Paul Harris Fellow awards were given to Rotarian Holly Dvorak and DG Sheila Rollins.

The Rotary Club of Hampton
SPONSORS FREE PUBLIC CONCERT

The Hampton Rotary Club recently sponsored a free Summer Series Concert at the North Hampton Band Stand on Wednesday, July 22nd.  Several Hampton Rotarians, family and friends along with a large crowd enjoyed a perfect summer’s evening relaxing to the musical offerings of 97 North, a classic rock band playing music from the 60’s-70’s like The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Dube Brothers, etc. The band was both talented in its renditions and enjoyable in their interaction with the crowd.

The concert is always free and open to everyone on Wednesday evenings at the Band Stand at the intersection of Rte 111 & Rte 151 in North Hampton from 6 pm - 8 pm.

The Rotary Club of Portsmouth
HOLDS CHARITY GOLF TOURNAMENT

The Portsmouth Rotary’s 22nd Annual Golf Tournament was held at the beautiful Breakfast Hill Country Club in Greenland, NH on June 19th. This year we had four Rotarian foursomes and some friendly competition.

Committee Chair Andy Chase reported another successful tournament.  This year the tournament had 108 golfers and raised $30,135.00.  Andy also pointed out that the coveted Rotary Cup has remained in the possession of members of the Portsmouth club.  Better luck next year fellow Rotarians.

Those funds helped push the Basic Needs endowment to approximately $140,000.00.  Very impressive! A big thank you to the sponsors and volunteers who helped make it happen.

2015 ROTARY VOCATION AWARDS

Rotarians John Rice, Neal Ouellette, committee co-chairs and Miranda Butson came to the front to welcome everyone to the 2015 Rotary Vocation Awards Presentation. Vocational service is the second of Rotary's five avenues of service. The others being club service, community service, youth service and international service.

The four award recipients truly exemplify our "service above self" motto. Each was chosen for significant contributions in one of four vocational categories: public service, health and human services, education and a general category.  This year there were 10 people nominated. Chairman Rice thanked all the Rotarians for taking the time to make nominations

Each winner received a plaque and flowers as well as a $500 check from the club for the charity of their choice.
