Also Introduced the 2024 Outreach Team to Poland

On December 9, 2023 over 30 District and other Rotarians attended the last International Café of 2023. DGN Emma Bodwell, host for the Cafe, started by introducing the six members of the District 7780 International Outreach Team traveling to Poland in 2024. They include:

Kimberly Ann Masucci – Exeter – Co-Team Leader

NellAnn Hiatt – Seacoast Rotary Club of Portsmouth

This team will be travelling to Poland in the March/April time frame.

Ghana Water Project
Walter Hughes of the Rotary Club of Salem, Virginia, described District #7570’s water project in Ghana. He noted that 75% of water borne diseases can be avoided by taking common sense sanitary measures. Their $225,000 project plans to drill 54 water wells impacting over 32,000 people. The project also includes micro-credit loans and significant local involvement.

COLOMBIA - Dry Toilet Project
Carlos Acosta and George Rivera from the Rotary Club of Cali North in Colombia described their dry toilets project. They noted that only 3% of the water on earth is fresh and only 5% of that is fit for human consumption. Much of the pollution of drinking water comes from feces and urine. Their dry toilets, which they make from recycled plastic, separates the feces from the urine and the feces is then composted and used as fertilizer. This project builds on a previous water filtration project. The budget for their project is $92,000, made up of club, district and RI foundation funds.

WESTERN KENYA - Malaria Project
Dan Perlman of District #5470 in Colorado described a malaria project in western Kenya coordinated by the Rotary Club of Aspen, Colorado. He referenced a new Rotary Action Group (RAG) called the Rotarians Against Malaria Global. They are looking to have Clubs in 20 Rotary Districts donate $10,000 to be matched by District Designated Funds from those Districts and then topped off by an RI Global Grant for a total budget of more than $400,000. Dan’s presentation concluded with a moving 5-minute video by a person who contracted cerebral malaria.

GUATEMALA - Literacy Project
Finally, Emma showed a video of Carolyn Johnson describing the Guatemala Literacy Project (GLP). Carolyn has been involved with the GLP for 18 years and presented information on how education, and lack thereof, has changed the lives of three generations, providing an example with one family. GLP started with providing text books and training for teachers on how to use them to create active meaningful learning rather than rote copying. The project is sustainable as the parents make very small payments each year and after 5 years that allows the books to be replaced. A similar process is being used for computer education on a 7-year cycle. They are applying for a $500,000 Global Grant and a tour will be conducted on February 4-11, 2024.
