January Is for Fresh Starts
By DG Emma Bodwell, Bridgton-Lake Region RC

Well… here we are. January 1. Halfway through the Rotary year. Can you believe it? Sometimes I feel like I just started club visits, and now I’m watching snow fall and prepping for PELS and planning the District Conference. Where did the time go?

But January is a wonderful time to pause, reflect, and reset — for ourselves, and for our clubs.
What has your club done this year that you’re proud of?
What do you want to try next?
What do you want to learn?
Who do you want to invite into this thing we love?
Whether it’s setting new goals, building new memories, or trying something totally different—
this is the month to take that next step.

🔁 Try Something New

I encourage you—and your club-to start 2026 with a learning mindset.  Here are a few easy ideas to spark momentum:

Check out the Rotary Learning Center-amazing resources on everything from Foundation to public image

Sign up for RLI (Rotary Leadership Institute)-a fun, in-person way to meet Rotarians from other clubs and grow your Rotary toolbox (Check out www.rlinea.org FMI)

Visit another club—it’s one of the best ways to get inspired

Try a new meeting format bring in a vocational speaker or host a community Q&A

Reach out to someone in your club you don’t know well and learn their Rotary story

🎯 January’s Focus Areas

This month, we celebrate two key themes:

Vocational Service-the heart of Rotary’s second Avenue of Service. It's about bringing integrity and purpose into everything we do-in our work, our relationships, and our Rotary service. It’s also about honoring and using our professional skills to make our

communities stronger.

Rotary Awareness-which is really about telling our story. Who are we? Why does this matter? And how can we help others see the value of belonging to something bigger than themselves? If you haven’t done a club program on Rotary 101 or shared Rotary stories on

social media lately, January is a great time to start.
