Bridging the Gap in Education and Literacy in Uganda through New Curriculum Rollout Support

Grant success! This is an update on Global Grant GG2571582. Significant gains have been made in teacher education in Uganda. The focus of the grant was enhancing basic education and literacy in partnership with Uganda's Juliet Kyokunda and Rotary District 9214. This project successfully transformed education by providing teacher training, technological infrastructure, and educational resources to underserved communities.The project focused on reducing gender disparities in education, providing infrastructure to support less privileged communities. In the 2023/24 Rotary Year, District 9214's main objective was to support schools and teachers in mastering the New Curriculum requirements to deliver life-changing skills and knowledge to students through the implementation of continuous assessment of the new lower secondary curriculum, an overview of competence-based assessment.
Project Highlights:
A first training session was conducted at St. Mary's College Rushooroza, with an overwhelming number of teachers eager to participate. Up to 100 teachers from Bushenyi, Mitooma, Buhweju, Rubirizi, and Kasese successfully completed training in continuous assessment and competence-based learning for the new lower secondary curriculum. The training took place from May 12 to May 16, 2025.
The next series of training sessions is scheduled to target 130 teachers at the end of May 2025. Further training will occur in September 2025, during which two major training events are planned for the school holidays to maximize teacher participation.
Partnership and Support:
This Global Grant is paving the way for educational transformation in Uganda. It is creating pathways to quality education, one community at a time. The International Partner for this grant is the Rotary Club of Saco Bay Sunset. Partnering District 7780 clubs include the Rotary Clubs of Bath Sunrise, Brunswick Coastal, Ogunquit, and Durham Great Bay.
