District Grants Update &
A Powerful Example of Rotary Impact
By: Carol Marcotte, Ph.D., District Grant Coordinator, Saco Bay Sunset RC

It’s District Grant season, and things are moving quickly behind the scenes. Our 2025–2026 grantees wrapped up their final reports by May 30, and those reports are now with the District Oversight Committee for review.

Meanwhile, applications for 2026–2027 District Grants were screened on June 15, and recommendations will be discussed at the July Foundation Committee meeting before heading to Rotary International.

Deadlines and processes matter — but what really brings District Grants to life is seeing what they do for our communities. And this past year, one project stands out as a shining example of Rotary’s ability to meet real needs with creativity, compassion, and collaboration.

💚 Spotlight: Fryeburg Academy’s Peer Counseling & Mental Health Advocacy Program
Funded by a 2025–2026 District 7780 Grant

Recognizing the growing mental health challenges facing teens in Oxford County, the Rotary Club of Fryeburg Area partnered with Fryeburg Academy to launch the school’s first-ever student-led Peer Counseling and Mental Health Advocacy Program — a milestone for the Academy and a powerful investment in youth wellness.

With support from the District Grant, student leaders (including Interact members!) received training to provide peer support, lead awareness campaigns, and help build a more open, stigma-free culture around mental health.

🌱 What This Grant Made Possible

Creation of student support groups and the Green Bandana Project, promoting visible mental health advocacy.
One-on-one peer connections, monthly wellness lunches, and a brand-new peer support website.
School-wide awareness through social media, events, and community outreach.
Training for both students and faculty in restorative practices to strengthen a supportive school environment.
Engagement of more than 100 students and staff in mental health programming.
A sustainability plan to ensure future Peer Advocate Leaders (PALs) can continue the work for years to come.

🎉 Student-Led Events Included

Shred Your Stress Midterm • Wellness Lounge • Pep Rally Mental Health Awareness Event • Valentine’s “Self Love” Day • Finals Week De-Stress Activities

This project didn’t just check boxes — it changed the culture of the school, empowered students to support one another, and created a model that can grow and evolve long after the grant period ends. It’s exactly the kind of impact District Grants are designed to spark.

🔧 Why This Matters for Your Club

As we move into the 2026–2027 grant cycle, let this project inspire you. District Grants don’t have to be large to be transformative — they simply need heart, purpose, and a clear path to making life better for people in our communities.

If your club has an idea brewing, now is the time to shape it. The District Grants team is ready to help you bring it to life.
