District Education & Children’s Issues are discussed during a virtual satellite club meeting.
Satellite clubs provide another option for creating or diversifying Rotary clubs. A satellite club can function as a short-term transitional step on the way to becoming a full, independent Rotary club. A satellite club can also be a way for a group within a traditional Rotary club, organize around a special interest or different time of day. Satellite Rotary Clubs are part of the sponsoring Rotary Club and all members of the Satellite are members of the host club. Download a Guide to Satellite Clubs .
New satellite clubs must have at least 8 members at the time they form in order to satisfy the requirements of Article 13, Section 6(b) of the Standard Rotary Club Constitution. There is no maximum number of members. To become recognized as a Satellite Club, the club must be approved by the host club and an application must be submitted to Rotary International.
District 7780 has had three special groups operating like a Satellite club over the last several years. Damariscotta-Newcastle has Leaders Engaged in Group Service (LEGS), Bath Sunrise had the E-Club, and an independent group is organizing a virtual club devoted to Education and Children’s Issues. These special groups allow interested persons to become Rotarians without meeting the requirement of having at least 20 to form a Rotary Club.
Satellite Clubs in District 7780 have recently been added to the list for eligibility for District Grants. If the club is recognized by Rotary International as a Satellite Club, then both the host club and the Satellite Club may each apply for and be awarded a District Grant. The Portland Rotary Club has accepted (8) new members who are creating a Satellite Club, and we hope to have this club chartered very soon. As can be seen by the screen shot taken during their meeting Jan 25, 2022, the Satellite Club is very active.
