World Understanding and Peace Dinner

On Saturday, February 20th, over 200 District 7780 Rotarians, Interactors, Youth Exchange Student, Vocational Training Team members and friends gathered at the Marriott Sable Oaks in South Portland, Maine, to celebrate Rotary’s 111th birthday. Our World Peace and Understanding dinner featured guest speaker, Francesca Giovannini, who enlightened the audience about the current status of nuclear disarmament. Twenty-seven exceptional new Rotarians were honored for their efforts with “Above and Beyond” awards and two very special Rotarians received “Service Above Self” awards.

 

Susan Chadima, who joined the event via SKYPE from Afghanistan, was honored for her tireless work providing care for animals, helping to build a peaceful democracy through her work as a veterinarian in Kabul. Susan also has made it possible for over 700 veteran servicemen to bring their adopted companion dogs and cats home with them.

 

Leonard Seagren was honored for his passionate work with “Friends Forever” bringing together Protestant and Catholic youths from Northern Ireland for leadership and conflict resolution. Leonard and his wife have personally hosted over 250 of these students in their home.

 

 

Musical entertainment was provided by Hobson’s Choice, a four-piece combo featuring Rotarian Merrill Rollins. Exit polling indicated that the event was an overwhelming success and organizers Gov. Sheila Rollins, Marion Cheney, and AG Andrew Glazier would like to thank all the other volunteers who worked behind the scenes to make this event happen.
